Researchers at the Columbia Center For Children’s Environmental Health in New York have found an actual link between pregnant women that are exposed to air pollution and lower IQs in their children!
Indoor air pollution in peoples homes and offices containing Lead, Mercury, Asbestos, Fire Retardants, Solvents, Formaldehyde, Pesticides and other Volatile Organic Compounds also known as VOC’s are bad enough because these toxic chemicals can also cause lower IQ’s in children along with all sorts of other chronic environmental illness and health problems that often affect the general population! Quality HEPA air cleaners, HEPA air purifiers and HEPA vacuum cleaners can make a big difference in reducing the levels of these toxins!
Now it has been proven that the outdoor air can be toxic enough to cause the same problems
The testing involved 249 children of mothers that lived in low-income areas of New York City. The mothers wore air monitors that measured a type of air pollution known as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons also known as PAHs. These PAHs are produced by burning coal, diesel fumes, oil fumes and gasoline fumes found in traffic from cars, trucks and buses that are normal and produced in the test area. The pregnant women were all non-smokers and they wore the air pollution monitors for a 48-hour period of time.
At age 5 the children of the mothers in the test were given IQ tests that determined that the mothers that were exposed to the highest levels of PAH pollution had children that IQ scores were between 4.3 and 4.6 points lower then the children with mothers that were exposed to the least amount of pollution levels. Others factors were taken into consideration such as second hand smoke, the mothers education and the quality of the home environment for learning.
Since this is the first study of its kind additional studies need to be done to confirm these findings. However the results are very alarming since the levels of PAH pollution detected are very common in urban areas and may have lifelong affects on developing fetuses and children and throughout their adult lives!
It is our feeling that the combination of poor indoor and outdoor air pollution can together create much larger negative health affects for both unborn children and adults alike. Commercial buildings and many homes routinely bring polluted outside air into their breathing spaces to lower the levels of carbon dioxide levels. It is more important to NOW realize that the levels of toxins that people breathe in their offices and homes can cause chronic health problems that include immune dysfunctions, asthma, lung problems and even brain damage like Fetal Brain Syndrome.
