During And After Chemotherapy Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) & Environmental Needs
Chemotherapy is a grueling process that involves injecting chemicals by IV drip into the body to kill cancer cells or to destroy the immune system in preparation to do stem cell transplants, bone marrow transplants or organ transplants.
Types of common cancers that are treated with Chemotherapy are Bladder Cancer, Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Endometrial Cancer, Kidney (Renal) Cancer, Leukemia, Lung Cancer, Melanoma, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Pancreatic Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Skin Cancer and Thyroid Cancer.
PLEASE NOTE: This report is also accurate for other types of immune system diseases that do not require Chemotherapy!
When Chemotherapy is used as a treatment it drastically lowers the white blood cell count in your body to the point of not being able to protect your body from all types of infections and viruses.
While going through Chemotherapy it is very important for the people taking the chemo to protect themselves from breathing poor indoor air quality (IAQ) that may contain airborne viruses, bacteria and mold spores that can play havoc with their weakened immune systems.
During Chemotherapy at the hospital it is important to stay isolated from other people that may infect them with any kind of virus or bacteria! The hospital room must be kept in a clean room environment until the person going through Chemotherapy’s immune system can get a good start to rebuild itself. Many hospitals include a quality HEPA air purifier with a NON-OZONE producing ultraviolet light system in rooms for people going through Chemotherapy. It is important that the HEPA air purifier has a high rate of air exchange per hour so it can catch and destroy any virus, bacteria or mold spores quickly. A quality HEPA air purifier should be able to clean an average hospital room or bedroom sized area up to 12 times per hour. The air purifier should also contain pounds of activated carbon to absorb any out-gassing chemicals that may be coming from furniture or materials in the room.
If Chemotherapy is being done in an out patient environment and the person is living at home or if the person has just been released from the hospital it is very important to keep the home EXTREMELY CLEAN! Bedding and clothing should be washed in clean hot water and all hard surfaces in the home must be kept clean and disinfected with Pine-Sol or Lysol type disinfectants. Especially in the bathrooms and kitchen.
Remove all plants and flowers, as the dirt will often contain mold spores that can be very dangerous.
Wash all plates and silverware in very hot water with antibacterial dish soap to prevent infections of the digestive system.
Keep sick friends and relatives away from your home and if there is any question that a visitor is sick make them wear a N-95 approved facemask.
People going through Chemotherapy should wash their hands often especially after using the bathroom and all fruits and vegetables should be scrubbed under clean running water.
Avoid any and all mold and sources of mold spores! Have someone that is in good health remove and clean any mold in the home and throw away any object that has mold growing in it or on its surface.
Purchase at least two high quality HEPA Air purifiers that include a NON OZONE producing Ultraviolet (UV) light system that will kill viruses, bacteria and mold spores. We have found that the Airpura S600 UV HEPA air purifier is the best HEPA air purifier with a UV light system on the market. Many hospitals use the Airpura S600 UV HEPA air purifiers to protect their patients going through Chemotherapy, Stem Cell Transplants and Organ Transplants. At Home most people will place one Airpura S600 HEPA air purifier in the bedroom and one in the family room where people relax and watch TV. If time is spent in a home office another Airpura S600 HEPA air purifier should be placed in that office living space area as well.
Vacuum the house regularly and more often then usual! NOTE: Most vacuum cleaners SPEW bacteria filled dust into the air while vacuuming and this is extremely dangerous for anyone going through Chemotherapy or with a weakened immune system to breathe! Only vacuum with a 100 percent SEALED HEPA vacuum cleaner and note that many HEPA vacuum cleaners are really not sealed still allowing bacteria filled dust to blow into the indoor environment to be breathed. We have found that the Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner (MADE IN THE USA) to be the best HEPA vacuum cleaner on the market as it is 100 percent sealed and no (ZERO) dust will blow back into the indoor environment while vacuuming. The Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner will pass a zero laser particle count test and they are used by many health agencies and by the Federal Government to protect equipment and personnel from many different types of contamination.
If the person going through Chemotherapy or with a weakened immune system has a home with a ducted heating or air conditioning (A/C) system, it is a good idea to replace the 3-5 percent low efficiency throw away air filters with a high quality 90 percent efficient self charging electrostatic air filter. Self charging electrostatic air filters are not expensive and they can be cleaned monthly and replaced back in the system to provide many years of upgraded air filtration to help keep the ductwork and home clean with much less dust and the bacteria and mold spores that attach to the dust.
Do not eat raw foods! Completely cook all meat, chicken and fish and do not eat raw eggs, raw milk or cookie dough.
Bathe pets frequently and litter boxes should be changed often by someone other than the person going through Chemotherapy or with a weakened immune system.
Toys and play areas should be kept clean with antimicrobial surface disinfectants and always try to provide children with toys and dolls that can be washed with hot water in a washing machine. URGENT NOTE: Keep children away from all outdoor sandboxes. This is because sandboxes are often loaded with many different strains of bacteria, viruses and parasites due to cats, dogs and other animals using sandbox’s as a bathroom!
Anyone going through Chemotherapy or with a weakened immune system should stay out of hot tubs, jacuzzi’s and swimming pools until their immune system comes back to normal. This is because pools and pool areas often contain a variety of molds, bacteria and virus’s that can be very dangerous to anyone with a weakened immune system.
Thank you for reading our report. It is our hope and desire that this report will be a great help for you or a loved on going through Chemotherapy or have a weakened immune system.
