Chemotherapy is a process that involves orally ingesting or injecting chemicals by syringe or IV drip into the body to kill cancer cells or to destroy the immune system in preparation to do an often live saving stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant.

When Chemotherapy is used as a treatment for Leukemia or a bone marrow transplant it quickly lowers the white blood cell count in your body often to the degree of not being able to protect the body from the many different strains of bacteria, infections and viruses that can cause adverse health problems.

While going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia or a bone marrow transplant it is very important to stay fully protected from breathing poor indoor air quality (IAQ) that may contain viruses, bacteria and mold spores that can further harm the weakened immune system.

During Chemotherapy for Leukemia or bone marrow transplant at the hospital it is important to stay away from other people that may infect them with any kind of virus or bacteria! The hospital room must be kept in a clean room environment until the person going through Chemotherapy’s immune system can get a good opportunity to rebuild itself. Many hospitals include a quality HEPA air cleaner with a non-ozone producing ultraviolet (UV) light system in rooms for people going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia. It is important that the HEPA air cleaner has a high rate of air exchange per hour so it can catch and destroy any virus, bacteria or mold spores quickly. A quality HEPA air cleaner should be able to clean an average hospital room or bedroom sized area up to 12 times per hour. The air purifier should also include pounds of activated carbon combined with natural Zeolite to absorb any chemical out-gassing that may be coming from carpeting, building materials or furniture in the room.

If Chemotherapy for Leukemia or a bone marrow transplant is being done in an out patient basis and the person is living at home or has just been released from the hospital it is very important to keep the home VERY CLEAN! Bedding and clothing should be washed in hot water and all hard surfaces in the home must be kept clean and disinfected with proper antibacterial disinfectants with extra care for the bathrooms and kitchen.

Remove all plants and flowers! This is because the dirt will often include mold spores that can be very dangerous.

Wash all plates and silverware in hot water with antibacterial dish detergent to stop infections of the digestive system.

Keep sick friends and relatives away from your home and if there is any questions that a visitor is sick make them wear a hospital-approved facemask.

People going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia should wash their hands often especially after using the bathroom and all fruits and vegetables should be scrubbed under clean running water.

Stay away from any and all mold and sources of mold spores! Have someone that is healthy remove and clean all possible mold in the home and throw away any object that has mold growing on it if possible.

Purchase at least two high quality HEPA air cleaners that include a non-ozone producing Ultraviolet (UV) light system that will kill viruses, bacteria and mold spores. We have found that the TRACS HEPA air cleaner is the best HEPA air purifier with a UV light system on the market. Many hospitals use the TRACS HEPA air cleaner to protect their patients going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia. Most people will place one TRACS HEPA air cleaner in the bedroom and one in the family room where people relax and watch TV. If time is spent in a home office another TRACS HEPA air cleaner should be placed in that living space area as well.

Vacuum the house often then usual! NOTE: Almost all vacuum cleaners LEAK bacteria filled dust back into the air while vacuuming and this is extremely dangerous for anyone going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia, bone marrow transplant or with a weakened immune system to breathe! Only vacuum with a SEALED HEPA vacuum cleaner and note that many HEPA vacuum cleaners are really not sealed still allowing bacteria filled dust to blow into the indoor environment to be breathed. We have found that the Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner (WHICH IS MADE IN THE USA) to be the best HEPA vacuum cleaner on the market as it is one hundred percent sealed and no (ZERO) dust will blow back into the indoor environment while vacuuming. The Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner will pass a zero laser particle count test and they are used by many health agencies and the Federal Government to protect equipment and personnel from many different types of contamination.

If the person going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia, bone marrow transplant or with a weakened immune system has a home with air ducts in their heating (Furnace) or air conditioning (A/C) system, it is a good practice to replace the low quality, inefficient throw away air filters with a high quality 90 percent efficient self charging electrostatic air filter. These lifetime, washable air filters are not expensive and they can be cleaned monthly and put back into the system to provide many years of high quality air filtration to help keep the ductwork and home clean with much less dust and the bacteria and mold spores that ride on airborne dust particles.

Stay away from raw foods! Thoroughly cook all meat, chicken and fish and do not ingest raw eggs, raw milk or cookie dough.

Bathe pets once a week and remember that litter boxes should be cleaned out often by someone other than the person going through Chemotherapy for leukemia, bone marrow transplants or if they suffer from a weakened immune system.

Toys and play areas should be kept clean with antimicrobial surface disinfectants and always try to give children toys and dolls that can be easily cleaned or washed with hot water in a washing machine. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Keep children out of outdoor sandboxes. This is because sandboxes can be infected with many different strains of bacteria, viruses that include parasites because cats, dogs and other animals will often use a sandbox for their personal bathroom!

Anyone going through Chemotherapy for Leukemia, bone marrow transplant or with a weakened immune system should stay away from hot tubs, Jacuzzi’s and swimming pools until their immune system comes back to a normal level. Swimming pools and pool areas often have molds, bacteria and viruses that are very dangerous for people with weakened immune systems.
